The demise of the record shop has long been predicted. We have already lost Virgin Music from the High Street, and HMV is struggling. But I think it's time to stand up in defence of this high street institution. It may just be that I'm a dinosaur, or I don't get time to explore the web, but I still find wandering round the shelves a profitable experience.
A few months ago I picked up a triple CD collection from the Old Grey Whistle test - quite uneven and the live set was particularly disappointing. But through this triple CD I picked up on the Allman Brothers Band. The next time I went in I found a 5 CD set of their music for £20. This week I didn't find anything particular but I heard Joe Bonamassa being played in store. I've now been listening to several tracks on Spotify - he reminds me of the late, great Gary Moore. So thanks to HMV I am getting to widen my repertoire - even if it remains firmly fixed in the blues and rock spectrum.
